Despite a a fever, that broke, and a historical snow storm, Larisa arrived back in her home on Sunday evening. All the details aren't in, but I wanted to let everyone know that she is home and is thrilled to be with her family and in her own room. They do have a hospital bed set up in the back bedroom and a wheelchair that does fit through the halls. Yesterday a nurse was there going over all the ins and outs. She will be coming by on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. As for a lot of details, I am still waiting to get those and when I do, I will pass them along.
We are happy she is home and doing great! Thanks for all your many many prayers, kind words and support. We know that with out you and your help along with divine intervention, the outcome could have been much worse. Thank you so much.

Trip home postponed
On Wednesday morning, Larisa woke up with horrible pain just below her colostomy bag. As the day progressed it got really bad and she spiked a fever. They ended up quickly loading her up in an ambulance and sent her to Winchester hospital.
After blood work, ultra sounds, and a CAT scan, nothing real specific was determined, except for signs of inflammation around the area that was hurting. It appears that there is some kind of infection. The IV antibiotic that she has been on was to be finished on the 17th. The doctors said that often times this particular IV antibiotic will mask other problems that may be going on. They took her off the antibiotic and were waiting for results of labs and tests to determine what type of antibiotic they would need to give her. Thursday, she was still spiking a fever in the late afternoon, which postponed her trip home for the 18th.
As of yesterday, the fever has broken, and the pain has significantly decreased. She is on another antibiotic and seems to be doing better. However, because of this infection and the huge snow storm that we are getting, it has postponed her trip home until sometime early in the week.
Physically she is doing better, but emotionally, really bummed. Nothing more disappointing to hear you are going home, and then your not. We all want her home, but when her body is in a condition to be home. Right now she is just taking it day by day, we anticipate her to be home for Christmas - but it will be up to her body to determine whether she is ready to go or not.
Now her recovery will require a lot of patience, hope and faith to make it through the long days as all her bones and wounds heal. Not an easy task, but as we all know, when we have experiences that require a lot of patience and faith, in the long run we come out stronger and with new perspective on what we are capable of doing.

She's coming home
I apology for not writing for the past week -- mainly there has been not much to report and secondly I was in Florida on a family vacation visiting Mickey and the gang.
The past several weeks for Larisa have been just letting her body heal. She had some x-rays done on her wrist over a week ago to determine whether or not her arm could bear any weight. None of the bones are ready to have any weight put on them. This limits what they are able to do in physical therapy - right now.
They had given her the OK to go home. She is VERY excited about this as well as her family. It has been determined that at this point there is very little she can do in physical therapy and her days are spent just resting and sitting. They feel she can just as easily do that at home. She is still on an IV antibiotic - until Dec. 17th. It is because of the IV that she really has needed to stay in Winchester. The IV will be completed on the 17th and as soon as it is out -- she will be OUT.
The wound on her leg is looking really really good. The inside of the leg has healed almost to the surface of the skin. It has not been decided whether or not she will need to come home on the vac. That will be decided in the next day or two.
The family has been busy getting the house ready for her to come home. As I mentioned before, a friend's father built a ramp on the front porch to make it easy to get in the house. The have purchased a hospital bed, mattress, and wheelchair for her as well. Everything is set up, all they need is Larisa -- she will be there soon enough. As it stands right now she will not be returning back to Winchester Rehab Center.
Sometime after Christmas she will be go back to Fairfax to have the bone graft on her thigh done. The date has not been set. It is our understanding that she will be in for the day and back home -- they may keep her one night. That too will be decided after the surgery. They are also looking at reversing the colostomy in the next several weeks - that will be a great change.
Over all she is doing great. She is so thankful and grateful for all the kindness she has been shown and the overwhelming support. It is experiences like these that remind us how blessed we are on a daily basis and that we should never take for granted what we have been given.

How is she doin?
Over the past week, with the Thanksgiving holiday -- there was not much to report. That is why you may be wondering if I was ever going to update. Well, now I have stuff to report.
Thanksgiving was great. Larisa had the opportunity to go home for a few hours to each turkey and pie with her family. Transporting her to and from was a little rough, since this was Chantel and Sergio's first time ever doing it. Once they got her in the house, it was a really nice afternoon. She did not want to go back to the Rehab center, but knew she had to. Thanksgiving was just their little family -- which I know they had many moments of things to be grateful for.
Since Thanksgiving - she has spent most of her time, just resting and letting things heal. Physical therapy is not that productive yet and they are limited, because she is unable to bear any weight on any limb. Things have been pretty quiet. She has enjoyed visits from family and friends, that is always a bright spot in her day!
This past Monday Larisa was transported down to the Fairfax area to meet with her doctor for a check up. He seemed pleased with her progress. He did tell them that the bone graft on her thigh will be done shortly after Christmas and that it would also require a skin graft later.
As a result of the appointment and her Doctor at the Rehab center, it has been decided at this point that Larisa will be able to go home on/or around Dec 17th permanently. Needless to say she and her family are very excited. Since they are unable to do much PT -- her doctor felt she could recover at home. She will most likely be assigned an in home nurse that will come frequently to check on her, change bandages and various other medical needs. She needs to wait until Dec 17th in order to finish the IV antibiotic. Once that is complete, barring no complications between now and then - it looks like she will be home for Christmas.
Chantel and Sergio are making preparations for bringing her home. They have purchased a hospital bed and are looking into buying a wheelchair. Over the next several weeks they will fine tune the things they will need to help make the transition home more smoothly.
It is such a blessing to see how far she has come over the past 8 weeks. Daily we express our thanks and gratitude, not only for her life, we should for our own. Despite our own challenges we still have much to be thankful for.

Home for a few hours
This past week Larisa has worked extra hard in physical therapy. Until recently it has been taking about 4 people to move her from place to place - since she has been unable to bear weight on any one limb. This week, she has worked really hard to be able to bear weight and help assist in moving herself. Well, it has paid off. The other day it took only Larisa and her therapist to move her. As a result of this great progress her doctor has given her permission to go home on Thanksgiving Day for about 3-4 hours for turkey and pumpkin pie. She will go home in the early afternoon and between her IV doses of antibiotic.
Chantel said that they have a car at the rehab center that is used to teach people how to help patients in and out of he car. Chantel and Sergio where shown how and what to do, and I am sure practiced. Last Monday a friend's father built a ramp off the front porch of Larisa's house for her wheelchair. They are so grateful for his kindness, skills and his timing was perfect. The plan will be to drive the car up on the grass and get her as close to the ramp as possible, then they can wheel her in the rest of the way.
Needless to say the family is very excited, and Larisa is beyond excited. It will be a quiet afternoon with just their immediate family. I am sure a special moment for them as they reflect on the things they are thankful for this year. We will be anxious to hear how the afternoon goes.
As for all the battle wounds, everything is healing great. Her ankle is looking amazing. They are so pleased with how the skin and the opening are closing up. All the other wounds are closing up, and she is able to do more each day with her therapy. Now it is just a matter of time.

She is so thankful for your faith and your strength that has helped them make it this far.

On the Move
On Friday life got even better for Larisa. She was taught how to use a powered wheelchair. She said it was awesome. The seat itself was so much more comfortable -- more padding. She can actually sit in it for a few hours and be ok. Unlike the other chair, 30 mins was too long. She likes the idea that she will now be able to go outside for some fresh air. She will have this chair for as long as she is in the rehab center. I told her we needed to make sure she had a horn and a cute basket -- and she said, it already came with one!
Overall everything is going well. Right now it is a lot of waiting for bones to heal and openings to close. The ankle wound is healing great and only requires dressing changes every other day. There is more attention on the leg wound, since it is larger and still has s drainage tube with a vac hooked to it. She is getting more mobility with her right arm and using her fingers much more. She is able to sit upright for longer periods and really is not feeling much pain in her back from the fractures. It is when she is moved from the bed to the wheel chair that things get pretty uncomfortable. When she wears her brace, particularly during therapy -- it helps keep everything in place and moving is better.
On the 30th of November, she will head back to Fairfax for the day to see her doctor, the one who has been doing all the surgeries. He will check her over and take a bunch of pictures to see how everything is healing. It is anticipated at that time, he will give some idea as to when the bone graft on her leg will be done. There is a possibility that it could be done prior to Christmas. He will also address the colostomy bag, and look to see when they can reverse it. At this point, things will be decided as her body is ready.

Doing Great
I had the opportunity to go and spend some time with Larisa today - WOW does she look great! It truly is amazing to see how far she has come in 5 weeks! She was sitting up and even bending forward. She said her back doesn't really hurt her that much, but her tail bone does. Yesterday they found out that she has a couple of pins or screws in her tail bone. Apparently it was pushed out of where it should be, not broken, but they put the screws in to help it stay in place while everything is trying to heal. Sitting in the up right position for any length of time, it gets really uncomfortable.
All of her wounds looked amazing as well. Her right arm only has a few scabs left as remnants of the surgery. I was so surprised to not see any red or pink where the incision is -- the doctor did a fabulous job. She does wear a brace on it and recently is doing a lot more with her fingers. She is able to lift her arm up and is even feeding herself.
The wound nurse came in this evening to check her foot -- Chantel stayed long enough to see how it was doing. She could not believe how well it was healing. It had changed dramatically, even just from 2 days ago. As a result, a skin graft will not be needed for her foot.
She is experiencing nerve damage in both feet, more in the left than in the right. It is painful and has a tingling sensation. The Doctors have indicated that it should heal on its own, but time will tell. Larisa's thigh is healing slow and steady. It is a deep and big wound. It is starting to itch, a good sign of healing. The drain and packing continue to do their job, which helps speed up the healing time. Her trach hole, looks pretty closed up and has healed nicely.
They have determined what was causing the nausea and throwing up last weekend -- one of the antibiotics she was on did not agree with her. They have changed her medication and she is doing so much better. Her appetite has not been that great, but today at lunch she ate pretty well and dinner she did great. Hopefully the change in medication, will help increase her appetite. Also, as she becomes more active the appetite will increase. They think she has lost about 20 pounds. You can definitely see it and feel it - now she just needs to eat for nutrition and to help the healing process.
Her days are busy with nurses poking and prodding as well as physical and occupational therapy. She does therapy for a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the afternoon. Right now it isn't that difficult for her, since she does not have any one limb that she can put weight on. The hardest part is just moving her from place to place. The have assured her that over time, it will get better and harder, and it will. The measured her leg lifting today and it was great. It put a little smile on her face.
Obviously, she would love to be home, in her own bed and her own things - but knows she is where she needs to be. Her sadness at times comes from watching all her friends move on without and wishing things were normal - I think a realistic thought for anyone going through this kind of trial. But, she is so grateful for her family and friends and the support they have shown her. It will be that support and love that will help the long days be bearable and will help her to push harder and longer to get where she wants to go.

Rough Night and Day
Early this morning I sent a text to Larisa and asked her how her first night in her new home was. About 5 mins later my phone beeps with a response...."Not so good. Been a rough night. I have have been throwing up." At first they were thinking it was nerves and anxiousness, but since it continued through the night, the doctors are not sure where it was coming from. By late this morning, it had stopped and by dinner time she was able to eat a little something. She is still feeling nauseous, but at least keeping food in.
It has been a rough day. They have checked and cleaned everything again today. They have not re-inserted the drainage tube and pump in her leg yet. They have opted to "wet pack" it. When they wet pack, they take gauze and soak in in saline then pack the wet gauze in her leg. We are not sure if and when they will set her back up on the pump. I think they are just watching to see how everything settles.
The wound on the top of her foot and front of her ankle is not healing as quickly as they would like. It has a spot that does not look good, however, no infection has been detected. They are watching it very closely.
We are asking that visitors hold off coming by until Tues or Wed to allow her some time to adjust, get settled and feel better. Right now she is not feeling well and would probably not be very good company.
Chantel commented that being at the rehab center is a bit different than at the hospital. At the hospital, Larisa was checked on very frequently -- every couple of hours or more. Today she did not see anyone come in for about 5 hours. She is a little worried about it, but understands that this is a different setting and if Larisa needed anything all she would have to do is ring for a nurse. It will just take time to adjust, if not she can always talk to someone in charge. They really like the doctor and was happy to hear he was a UVA graduate...

She knows she will overcome this trial, but it doesn't make it easy while you are in the thick of it. Chantel reminded her to pray for strength and courage to fight this battle. Larisa knows that and will do it.
One of the greatest truths I know, and I know Larisa knows, is that we have not been left to fight any of our challenges alone, nor has anyone else. We have a loving Father in Heaven who is very aware of who we are. He knows what we need, when we need it and that it will only strengthen our character. We have been told scripturally that "thine afflictions shall be but a small moment.." and if we endure it well, " all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good." Not something we always think about when things seem really tough.
I think of a diamond -- when found it is covered in dirt, jagged edges, and unpolished. But, once taken to a diamond expert, it is cleaned, shaped and polished to be something beautiful. Our lives are much the same. It may be days, weeks, months or even years later when we will look back at the trial and see how we have been cleaned, shaped, and polished leaving a more refined person. Larisa will look back and learn some of the reasons why. In the mean time, she will continue to look forward and step by step will climb the ladder to the top.

We have a loving Father in Heaven who is very aware of who we are. He knows what we need, when we need it and that it will only strengthen our character. We have been told scripturally that "thine afflictions shall be but a small moment.." and if we endure it well, " all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good." Not something we always think about when things seem really tough.
I think of a diamond -- when found it is covered in dirt, jagged edges, and unpolished. But, once taken to a diamond expert, it is cleaned, shaped and polished to be something beautiful. Our lives are much the same. It may be days, weeks, months or even years later when we will look back at the trial and see how we have been cleaned, shaped, and polished leaving a more refined person. Larisa will look back and learn some of the reasons why. In the mean time, she will continue to look forward and step by step will climb the ladder to the top.

Larisa has arrived!
The anticipated move took place about 10:30 this morning, arriving at the Winchester Medical Rehabilitation Center in Winchester, VA. Chantel was allowed to ride with her, which I know made it easier to do.
Yesterday, she was quite anxious about the event, mostly the pain that could be involved in actually moving her, and the unknown of a new place and new people. She was given some medication to help settle her stomach and sleep through the night.
The move went quite smoothly and she did great. Wearing her back brace really helped to control the discomfort level. She was relaxed and actually even fell asleep on the way there. I know she is happy the move is over and she told me that she was happy to be "one step closer to home."
Larisa overall is healing at a steady pace. On Thursday they did do another leg cleaning. They also removed the packing in her knee and determined that the slight infection there was gone. As a result of the infection being gone, they were able to staple shut the opening in her knee. Prior to leaving Fairfax, they removed all of her IV's and inserted a new pic line that they will use to give her her medications. She was relieved to have all the IV's out.
They removed the pump and drain out of her leg and replaced it with special wet and dry gauze. They will be hooking that all back up in Winchester. Both the drain and the pump are there to facilitate good blood flow, which is needed for the bone to heal, and to help keep bacteria out. All of her wounds and bandages were cleaned and replaced. Each of the nurses indicated that things were coming right a long and were looking good.

Just a reminder, visitors are great and a positive part of her recovery. When you plan to visit, be sure you have not been sick or around anyone who is contagious. Be sure to wash hands before going into see her. Larisa's immune system is very low, and particularly now that she does not have a spleen to help fight the viruses. Also, she still has 4 open wounds which are like a playground for germs. I think none of us would like to see her add anything new to her health concerns. She loves to see her family and friends, especially now that she is closer it will be more convient for people to come. Just be mindful that she tires very easily and be cautious of how long you stay. We want her to enjoy her visits, but more importantly we want her to get well and return home.

Things change daily
Larisa had a better day today then yesterday. She was able to rest and had only a few pokings and probings throughout the day. Chantel was able to talk to the doctor and get a few questions answered. The infection in the leg is doing better, but will require another cleaning. As it stands right now she is on the waiting list to have it done tomorrow. Depending on how the doctors other surgeries go, will determine if he will be able to fit her in tomorrow. If not tomorrow he will clean it out again on Thursday. He seemed to indicate that this may be the last cleaning. She does have a little opening on her knee that is slightly infected. They will clean out that opening as well when they do her thigh.
The doctor indicated that her foot wound has turned a corner and is healing really nicely. Right now, he feels pretty confident that a skin graft will not be necessary on her foot. He will just keep an eye on it over time to be sure that is the case.
They did take x-rays today of her hip, pelvis and femur. The results have not been given yet, however, the doctor did say that based on the cleaning, that she will need a bone graft on her femur. The middle portion of the femur was broken into a gazillion pieces, basically leaving a gap in the middle of the bone. Chantel thinks that a lot of the cleaning they have been doing has been to not only to clean, but remove all the fragments of free floating bone. The bone graft will not be done until the infection is cleared up and other concerns are resolved. Most likely the bone will come from the hip, the one side that is in good shape. The surgery will be set up at a later date, not sure when.
Plans change daily, but as of today, the doctor feels by the beginning of next week she will be transported to Winchester. He wants to do one more cleaning of her leg and knee. He indicated that if by Friday everything looks good, she can possibly move on Saturday. The case worker over Larisa's case, called and told Chantel that they are holding her spot in Winchester, and even told her that Larisa would have a private room. Chantel said that when Larisa found out she had a private room, her first comment was, "I feel so selfish and privileged."
Larisa has been sharing a room with an older lady. As of today, her roommate moved to her Rehab Center to continue her recovery. Chantel said she could tell Larisa was pretty uneasy about being in the room alone, and was not wanting Chantel to leave till the very last minute. I think in most cases, when we don't feel well, or just having a rough time, Mom seems to always make things better and put us at ease. She did enjoy a nice fun evening with her grandparents tonight, which helps to take the focus off her issues and remind her that there is still a lot of things in life to enjoy and laugh at despite the trials we may be encountering. And don't they say, laughter is the best medicine....

Continue to Clean
Today, Larisa was put under again while they went in an cleaned out her leg again. The cleaning went well, but as of this afternoon, her leg is extremely swollen. Chantel says it is about 2x as big as the other leg. They are keeping a close watch on it. While she was in the operating room, they removed the pins out of her foot as well. The good signs are that her heart rate is down and her blood pressure is back up -- it had been really low for a few days. On Saturday they gave her several units of blood, which seems to have helped everything. Her temperature is stable. She is on low oxygen through her nose to help keep her stable.
Today they also went in and cleaned out her knee. It has not been looking that great and they are keeping a watchful eye on that as well. The nurse told Chantel that they have about a foot and a half of gauze packed in her knee to help avoid any bacteria from getting in. Changing the packing and bandages is quite painful. Larisa has said that she likes it much better when the nurses change it because they are much more gentle and will stop and take a break, unlike the doctor. The doctor is great at his job, but not so slow and gentle.
Her trach bandages were changed as well. There is still an opening, but it is healing well. Her arm is no longer in a soft cast, but in a brace. She is starting to do little things with it. She some how manages to feed herself when family and friends are not there to help. She doesn't have much of an appetite, but is eating a little bit at a time.
Larisa's pain level was pretty high today, since they did a lot of poking, and cleaning. They did increase her medication a little. However, tonight they brought her in some morphine and she told them to hold off until she really felt like she needed it. She is one tough cookie!
Tomorrow they are planning to do x-rays of her pelvis and femur. Chantel has also asked them to take one of her back to have a better idea if things are healing. The results of these x-rays will determine if they will need to do a bone graft on her femur and to see if the pelvis needs any other procedures done to it as well.
As of right now, the move to Winchester is postponed for awhile - probably abt 2 weeks or longer. They are really wanting the infection to be cleared up and possibly do the skin and bone grafts before she leaves. It would be in her best interest to have all those things completed prior to leaving the hospital. It would be hard to make the move and then have to turn around and head back. Plus, all the surgeries would require her to be transported back to Fairfax at some point. They just want to make sure that her body is ready to be transported and can adapt to an environment that is not as closely monitored as the hospital.
Thank you so much to all of you who came out to Chick-Fil-a for Larisa. It was a great event and Larisa and her family want you to know how very much they appreciate you kindness and support. Chantel said the other night, Larisa had tears in her eyes as she commented to her mother that she could not believe how many people were praying for her and supporting her. I know she feels that love and those prayers on a daily basis. It will be those things that will help her to continue to climb this mountain to the top. A mountain top that she will reach, and come out stronger and better because of this challenge she is facing head on.

Infection Found - Move Postponed
This morning they found an infection in Larisa's leg. They took everything out (pump, drainage tube) and cleaned it all out. They inserted an antibiotic that will be released into the leg to help clear up the infection. This will postpone her move to Winchester, possibly into the middle or end of next week. The Doctors will probably need to go back in on Monday to redo the cleaning procedure again. It will be determined then, whether or not it will need to be done another time. During today's procedure, he did remove the pins from her wrist.
The doctor indicated that looking at the femur bone that is broken, it may require a bone graph. The femur was split in two and crushed. To help make sure that she has a good strong bone, it may require the extra bone to ensure stability. He will determine that over the next couple of weeks.
Chantel had not talked to Larisa yet when I last spoke to her. I know they are both itchy to get to Winchester. I know there is disappointment and that Larisa will be disappointed. But, Chantel is grateful it happened now before they actually transported her to Winchester and would have had to turn around and come right back. Small blessings.

Move on Hold
This morning Larisa is back in the operating room. She has been holding a very low grade fever but has been able to keep in in check with ice packs and her fan. However, it has been increasing and she had a rough day yesterday. The Doctors have checked all the wounds, and nothing is obvious. They think she may have an infection in her leg. This morning they are taking all the pumps, sponges and drains out of her thigh and doing a through cleaning to see if there is any infection. They think she has an infection somewhere, but have not determined where it is.
If they find nothing serious, she is scheduled to move tomorrow at 9:00am. If it is serious they will just keep her until they can clean up the infection. We will just wait to hear the results. I will keep you posted.

Moving on Friday
It has been decided that Larisa will be going to Winchester Medical Rehab Center in Winchester. As of right now, the intention is to move her tomorrow. The lady from Winchester is coming today to meet Larisa and assess her needs. Chantel said she was as nice a pie....Super sweet lady and was very excited to have Larisa come. I know that made them both feel better.
They will load her up in a patient transportation ambulance and make the hour drive to her new home -tomorrow. Truly a great sign of progress. As to the length of her stay, it is too early to determine and will only be determined as they begin doing extensive physical therapy. It will all be determined on how she progresses and how well her body heals and retrains itself to function properly.
Everyone is excited about this move - it will put her closer to her family and friends. She will now be only 30 mins away from home instead of an hour and a half. This is going to be a great help as Chantel and Sergio tend to the needs at the house and be there for Larisa. It will also be nice that friends will be close by as well to visit. Larisa was excited about going. She is a bit anxious, just to be going someplace different and new, but knows it is the next step.
Yesterday she was fitted with her new back brace. It is a true fashion statement -- bright yellow! It goes up under her chest down to her hips. It is soft inside and hard plastic on the outside. It wraps all they way around her back like a corset. They will be encouraging her to tighten up as tight as she can stand it to help keep everything in place. This brace is to help the fractures she has in her lower vertebrates. She will need to wear this during all Physical therapy, when she is sitting up and moving around. It will be an adjustment, but hopefully in time, it will give her some relief.
Yesterday she was in a lot of pain. They had been moving her around a lot- fitting the brace, draining her leg, xrays, and checking her ankle. She was really tired last night and was ready for her medications.
The wound nurse came in and checked her leg wound on her thigh today and could not believe how much better it was looking. The muscle inside is really starting to heal and closing the opening significantly. The drain will need to remain in there for about 2-5 months. Just depending on how it heals. The open wound on her foot, is not really on the ankle, but more on the top of her foot by the ankle is causing her lots of discomfort and is taking a longer time to heal. They are watching it closely. The wound on the foot will require a skin graft, which they will do in about 3-4 weeks. She will need to go back to Fairfax Hospital to have that procedure done. They are still not sure about the need to do a graft on the thigh yet.
Overall she is doing great. It is hard to believe that almost 4 weeks ago, she was fighting for her life. Now she is awake, healing and continues to fight to be better. The blessings that she has received over the past 4 weeks are overwhelming and truly a testimony that One greater than ourselves is not only aware of us as individuals, but will comfort, heal and bring peace as we trust those who help us and strive to exercise our faith in Christ. That is what helps us make it through these trials and challenges successfully and come out better people for having experienced the challenge.

Slow and Steady
Larisa is making progress, slow, but steady. Since her last surgery on her foot, she has had several uneventful but good days. There has not been a whole lot to report, so I waited until I felt like I had enough to pass on. I suppose this is a good thing...
This weekend they did remove her trach. She is breathing well on her own. The opening is still opened, they just keep it covered. I am under the impression that it will close up on it's own over time. Larisa still has the draining pump in her thigh, where the femur was broken. Today the doctor said it would need to be there for at least another 3-4 weeks. The reason for the pump is to continue to drain out the debris, but also helps to circulate the blood flow as the bone is healing. They have cleaned it several times. The last cleaning was very painful for her. The gauze had dried to the wound and it took and hour to get it off. Once they did get it off, they needed to clean the inside of the wound as well as cut off any dead tissue. Cleaning it will only be done as needed.
Her ankle on the foot that was broken has an open wound on it from the accident. Right now there are staples that run up the inside and the outside of the ankle. Over time the wound will close up and regenerate new skin, but a skin graft will be needed. They also have indicated that there is a chance that a skin graft will be needed for her thigh. That will require a graft about 6 inches by about 4 inches. Doctors will determine that later, as they watch how the leg and wound heal.
Today they did have her sitting in a wheel chair for about 30 minutes. At the end of that 30 mins, she was done. The pain had set in. They got her back into bed and gave her some pain meds to help take off the edge. She does have a pic line in that had been used for getting medications into her quickly. They really are not using that, and plan to have it removed prior to being transferred to a rehab center.
It looks like she will be relocated on Wednesday or Thursday of this week to a rehab center. The location of that is undetermined. They are checking out a couple of places and working with a case worker to put her in a facility that will best meet her needs. It is narrowed down to 2. We hope to know tomorrow where and when she will be going. Very exciting news, this only means her progress has been great!

We hope to know tomorrow where and when she will be going. Very exciting news, this only means her progress has been great!
She had a good weekend. She loved visiting with friends and family. She even asked to put a little make up on....That truly is a highlight for her and great medicine for her emotions. I think her family and friends are going to be a positive resource for her as she recovers. She did ask to see some pictures of the first couple of weeks. Nurses that had seen her at the onset of the accident and have been back to see her, they just keep saying how good she looks. She wanted to see how she did look. Chantel showed her the pictures and she said it made Larisa tear up. I think she realizes how far she has come and how blessed she has been. Chantel said that as Larisa's mind becomes clearer, she is realizing more and more how blessed she has been and how many people have been praying for her. Overwhelming for both of them.

Surgery on her foot
Yesterday Larisa had surgery on her foot. Chantel has not had a chance to talk to the doctor since the operation, but was told that everything went well. Larisa was anxious about this surgery. I think probably since all the other surgeries she was not even awake when they took her in. This one she was aware and knew what was going on. Over all it went well and she is doing great. Her leg is still draining quite a bit. It has been achy and they are watching it closely to be sure no infection sets in. The other areas are also achy, but starting to heal.
Her birthday was on Tuesday. She loved seeing a few friends and family members, including her little nephew who "slipped" into see her. It put a huge smile on her face. Despite some visits it was a rough day for her. I think the reality of what is going on and the long term rehabilitation is starting to sink in. She hears her friends talk about things they are doing and feels like she is missing out. I don't think for a minute she is not grateful to be alive, but the reality of the long road ahead is a bit overwhelming.
Physically, everything is going well. The Trach has been decreased to the lowest setting meaning that the opening is on the smallest hole. Larisa is not excited to have it gone, it gives her a great sense of security for breathing and is not as hard for her to do. She still has a lot of mucus in her lungs, and they are still weak. She still needs to work on getting the mucus out - right now it comes out of her mouth and the trach which is easier. Removing the trach it will be a lot more challenging to get it out. They will evaluate daily to see how she is doing.
Yesterday Chantel was able to spend the whole day with her which was really nice. She is still resting and sleeping quite a bit, but does have more awake time. She is doing physical therapy, which also takes a portion of her day. She does have a portable DVD player, but has fallen asleep within minutes of it starting. At this point, we are trying to put together somethings for her to do during the day. If you have any suggestions, please pass them along so that we can have a variety of things to help take her mind off of the clock ticking.
We hope that by the end of the weekend we will have some additional information about where and when she will be leaving this hospital. It will be to some rehabilitation location that has been undecided.

We are overwhelmed by the out pouring of love, generosity and concern that has been shown to Larisa, her immediate family as well as her extended family. She has fought a good fight and continues to show her determination to get better daily. I think the hardest times are yet to come as her body begins to heal and in time reteaches all the parts that are broken how to work again. Thank you for your prayers and kind words. We truly believe that through prayer and faith in Christ we can overcome even the toughest trials and that we are NEVER left alone. What a blessing to know that truth.

Another Room Change
Larisa is making great strides. Yesterday they ended up moving her from the transitional floor onto the regular floor. She is in a room with one other bed, which is currently empty. She was able to have some visitors this weekend, including both sets of Grandparents, one set lives in MD and the other set have been here from Utah for the past 2 1/2weeks helping the family. It was great for all of them to be able to see Larisa and how well she is doing.
They have started giving her regular foods to eat and so far has tolerated them well. She said all she really would like is Cheese Cake Factory! Can't blame her... She is still working on using her arms to eat and it requires someone to still feed her. That will come with time.
They have capped her trach off to help strengthen her lungs and breathing. It makes her a little winded, but they say that will help to strengthen them. Her discomfort level is tolerable, until medications start to wear down. Right now they are able to control it with medication and over time as she heals, they will be able to decrease the amount she is being given.
On Saturday, Chantel and Sergio went to Potomac State College and gathered up all of Larisa's belongings. They were so touched and overwhelmed by the reception and help they received from Larisa's friends. Chantel said that many things had already been boxed up before they got there. They had only a little let to gather up, but that her friends just pitched in and carried all the stuff to the car and it was done in 30 mins. They wanted me to tell all of you that helped how very grateful they were to you and were so touched by the love you have for Larisa. Larisa has some pretty amazing friends. Again, thank you!

Since Larisa has been moved to the regular floor - they may be more open to visitors. The nurses may regulate how many and who can go in depending on how she is doing. The hospital policy is that you have to be over 18. Visiting hours still are between 11-1 and 6-8pm. This is great news, for many of us who wish to see her. However, a bit of caution. We are all so happy to see how wonderful she is doing. Her body still has a long way to go to heal, and she tires very quickly. Those who decide to go and visit, if you have been sick or are not feeling well, please do not go. We don't want her to get sick. Also, plan for a short visit, one we don't want to wipe her out and two, it is alot of work for her to talk. We know that being able to see her family and friends will truly be a positive healing tool for Larisa. We just don't want to run her down and add to the list of things she already has going on.
Tomorrow is Larisa's birthday. We are so grateful for her spirit, her smile and will to fight. This year, it will truly be a day to celebrate her life. And for that we are thankful.

Larisa gets a new room!
It is amazing how each day is a new experience. Yesterday, Larisa was moved out of the trauma unit and put on the IMC - Immediate Care Floor. This is a transitional place between Trauma and ICU. This floor is set up for patients who still need lots of care, but the nurses now cover 3-4 patients as opposed to 1-2 patients. She has a roommate who is an elderly women and has the bed by the window, which will be nice.
Lots of great things happen yesterday. They had taken the ventilator off on Thursday, but Thursday night needed to hook it back up because she was working to hard to breath on her own. As of yesterday morning, they turned it back off and she was doing well. They will just monitor it and use it as needed while her lungs are strengthening and she retrains her body to breath easily on its own. They also took the feeding tube out, and introduced her to clear foods. She had applesauce, broth and some juice. She did great with it, they will watch to see how well she can digest it and add a little at a time.
Larisa met with a speech pathologist today. When she talks with the trach, it is either mouthed or whispered. The therapist taught her today how to talk by covering the hole. It will take some practice, but she was getting the hang of it. We don't know how long she will have the trach.
Nurses who had seen her when she first came in, have been by to see her and are amazed at how great she looks. Chantel sent me a picture on her phone today of Larisa, and she did look great. It was good to see her sitting up and smiling. Truly amazing to look at someone who has been through so much in such a short period of time and and see the blessings and know that the power to heal is real.
Many of you may already be aware that on Tuesday Oct 27th it is Larisa's 19th birthday. I have spoken to the hospital and to her nurse directly to find out what we can do to help her celebrate. She is still unable to have visitors, but you are more than welcome to send birthday wishes or get well wishes directly to the hospital and it will be given to her. A few guidelines.

Larisa is becoming more aware of how many people are praying for her and supporting her as she recovers. I know she is so appreciative of all the kind things and words that have been done on her behalf. As we continue to pray for her, not only are our lives strengthened but she continues to grow in faith and her desire to get better increases - truly a win win situation.

Physical Therapy Begins
Larisa had a restful night and was able to sleep all night. With the sedation medication no longer needed, she is awake more during the day. The nurses would like her to be awake a little longer in the day to help her sleep at night. However, the pain medications do make her feel tired. Today she has felt really tired and several areas are quite painful. They just continue to monitor the pain and give medications as needed.
They have begun some very simple physical therapy. They actually had her sitting on the edge of the bed with her legs bent and hanging for about 2 minutes. If you are like me, I was wondering how she was doing that since both legs have broken bones and her hip and pelvis are broken. The femur is not in any type of cast, just taped, since it has the titanium rod, drainage tube and pump in it. This allows her to bend at the knee. The other leg is in a cast at about 2 inches below the knee on down. Most of the damage is below knee, with exception of the patella -- which was broken. We are unsure how it is put back together, but, they are encouraging her to bend that leg anyway. Either way, she was able to do it for about 2 mins. Her knee was really hurting today, as a result of having surgery on it yesterday. Despite the discomfort, she did enjoy being in a new position, even for just a moment.
The ventilator is off! She is still hooked up to oxygen for the purpose of keeping the lungs from drying out. The Trach is still in, in case it would be needed while she is strengthening her lungs.
We are still unsure as to when they will finish her foot, but we are hopeful that will be the last of the surgeries - for now. Everything else has been put back together and the healing is underway.
There is still no time frame as to when and where she will go after the Trauma Unit. Most likely it will be a Unit between, ICU and Trauma. Visitors will still not be able to see her for awhile. She is still limited to only her parents and her siblings over 18, 4 hours a day. This is to protect her from germs as well as allow her lots of time to rest and to let her body heal.
Chantel said it has been great to see some of Larisa start to shine through all the battle wounds and the medications. She said she still rolls her eyes at her Mama and cops a little attitude about things she doesn't like. She brought in some pictures from when she was at the beach and loved looking at her friends and family. Over all she is moving forward and doing great.
Chantel told me that while driving home from the hospital the other night, she happened to notice all the little crosses people place on the sides of the road for loved ones they have lost and she just thanked her Father in Heaven that there will be no reminder left behind of a loved one past on. But, that their Larisa continues to be a bright spot in their life daily.

A hard day
Tuesday was a nice quiet and restful day which was good preparation for surgery and the long day she had on Wednesday. Yesterday they ended up doing surgery on the pelvis, her ankle and part of her foot. The ankle and top of her foot are done. They just have her toes left to fix. Her pelvis is broken in two places. The Dr. fixed one area and did a CAT SCAN of the other area. The second break was pretty clean and the Dr. said it will heal well on its own, if it IS a good clean break. He wanted to see what the SCAN showed and then would determine if he would need to go in and repair it. We are just waiting for the results of last nights SCAN.
Larisa is pretty much off the medication making her stay sedated. However, she is still on high doses of pain medications, which still make her groggy and sleepy. Her foot caused her a great deal of pain yesterday. There is a lot of nerve damage which is more painful than the break itself. Towards the end of the day, the nurse increased her pain medication to make her more comfortable.
Good news....she is breathing on her own. They may take the ventilator out today but will leave the Trach in longer to make sure that her breathing stays normal and that she can hold he own. She will be able to talk and eat still with the Trach in. She is still on a feeding tube and will be for awhile. They also removed the chest tubes. Chantel was able to see her arm, and could not believe the number of staples - close to a 100 staples, but said it looked really good and was healing well.
A few days ago, Larisa was having a fever, they think it was the result of some drainage in her leg. They have put in a tube attached to a pump into the leg that irrigates it and keeps it clean. The temperature is gone, and the leg looks great.
Now that Larisa is having more time she is awake, she is getting restless. She wants to move, but knows she is limited. With all the soft casts, plastic covers on the bed, she feels like she is in a sauna most of the time. They have a fan running in her room to help. The highlight of her day was when the nurse let her send a text to a friend. Chantel said it made her day.

It will be the will to fight and the love of others that will continue to carry her through this amazing challenge.

Making Progress
Larisa had a really good weekend. Her wake up time is increasing each day and so are her questions. She has been given more details about the accident and the severity of her injuries. Chantel said she kind of knew she had been there for awhile. All the information is beginning to process and she is handling it well. She is able to have conversations and be mostly understood. She has even been awake enough to have movies on and listen to music. All great signs of progress.
She has not had any other surgeries since Saturday, when the closed up her stomach. The Dr's had originally planned to do her ankle and foot surgery tomorrow. However, after looking at it today, he said it was still to swollen for him to operate on and it would have to wait. Instead, he is going to go ahead and repair her pelvis on Wednesday.
Her temperature is back to normal which is great news. They did reposition her medication pic line from in her chest into her arm. This helps eliminate infection and is a little more comfortable. She being weaned off the ventilator gradually. Her lungs are really weak and sore, and will require a lot of effort to strengthen them. They turn the ventilator off for 15 min intervals, and so far she has been able to hold her own. The have continued to wean her off the sedation medication, which is enabling her to be awake and more alert. Chantel said, she is anxious to move, but knows she is limited.
Today Larisa made a new friend. At the hospital, and even in the trauma unit, they have PET THERAPY. Larisa's Dr. wrote her a prescription to receive pet therapy. Today she was visited by a golden retriever. The dog spends a few minutes in the room with the patient. She was able to pet it with her good arm. Kerlina, her sister, who spent the day with her today, said Larisa LOVED IT!
Larisa has been asking about her friends. One of her friends, came by and talked to Chantel. Apparently, Chick-Fil-A sponsors a fund raising program where a group, school or club comes to eat from 4-6 on a specific day, and Chick-Fil-A will donate 20% of proceeds to that group or club. Her friend is going to arrange for this to take place and the proceeds will be donated to Larisa. The date and time has not be determined, but it will be in Martinsburg. As soon as I have that information, I will be sure to pass it a long.
It is hard to believe that it has been almost 2 weeks since Larisa's life changed. So many blessings have been given, so much love and support have been poured out abundantly, and our perspectives and priorities have maybe been changed. Chantel commented that when she first heard about ALL the bones and things that were broken and damaged, it was so overwhelming and she wondered if things were going to be alright. Over the past several days, as she has watched Larisa go into surgery after surgery and talking to her doctor, she realized how much could have gone wrong, and yet the doctor has reassured them that everything is fixable. What a blessing to have been placed in the hands of a good doctor and more importantly what blessing Larisa has been to their lives despite the tragic events of the past 12 days.
Chantel recalled a story about Larisa when she was almost a year old. She had been really sick. Chantel was laying down beside her on the bed. Sergio came in to be next to them and was rubbing her back when Larisa grabbed her Daddy's hand and put it on her head, indicating should wanted a priesthood blessing.
As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we believe that the priesthood, which is the power and authority to act in the name of God can be give to a worthy man by one who is in authority. As a priesthood holder, Larisa's Dad can give blessings of peace, comfort, guidance and healing to those who seek for that divine help. Larisa knew early on and had the faith that a blessing from her Dad would make her feel better. And I know she continues to seek for that same Spirit as she has been able to receive blessings from her father and grandfather over the past several days.
The joy we all feel, to know that she is waking up and progressing so well, makes us all excited for the healing process to begin and to know what steps are next. The healing process has begun and yet, there is still work to be completed to help the healing move forward. I know many are wondering "How long will she be there?" and "What next?" As of right now, there is no time frame for when and where she will go after the trauma unit. They will just take each day as it comes.
It has been amazing to hear the stories of people all over praying for her to be well. Our family has felt so overwhelmed with the out pouring of love you have shown. I have even received messages from people who do not even know Larisa or the family and have anonymously, indicated that they were praying for her. I suppose just just a little reminder to each of us that the world is still full of great people who just want to share their faith and love. And for that we are all grateful. The have continued to wean her off the sedation medication, which is enabling her to be awake and more alert. Chantel said, she is anxious to move, but knows she is limited.
Today Larisa made a new friend. At the hospital, and even in the trauma unit, they have PET THERAPY. Larisa's Dr. wrote her a prescription to receive pet therapy. Today she was visited by a golden retriever. The dog spends a few minutes in the room with the patient. She was able to pet it with her good arm. Kerlina, her sister, who spent the day with her today, said Larisa LOVED IT!
Larisa has been asking about her friends. One of her friends, came by and talked to Chantel. Apparently, Chick-Fil-A sponsors a fund raising program where a group, school or club comes to eat from 4-6 on a specific day, and Chick-Fil-A will donate 20% of proceeds to that group or club. Her friend is going to arrange for this to take place and the proceeds will be donated to Larisa. The date and time has not be determined, but it will be in Martinsburg. As soon as I have that information, I will be sure to pass it a long.
It is hard to believe that it has been almost 2 weeks since Larisa's life changed. So many blessings have been given, so much love and support have been poured out abundantly, and our perspectives and priorities have maybe been changed. Chantel commented that when she first heard about ALL the bones and things that were broken and damaged, it was so overwhelming and she wondered if things were going to be alright. Over the past several days, as she has watched Larisa go into surgery after surgery and talking to her doctor, she realized how much could have gone wrong, and yet the doctor has reassured them that everything is fixable. What a blessing to have been placed in the hands of a good doctor and more importantly what blessing Larisa has been to their lives despite the tragic events of the past 12 days.
Chantel recalled a story about Larisa when she was almost a year old. She had been really sick. Chantel was laying down beside her on the bed. Sergio came in to be next to them and was rubbing her back when Larisa grabbed her Daddy's hand and put it on her head, indicating should wanted a priesthood blessing.
As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we believe that the priesthood, which is the power and authority to act in the name of God can be give to a worthy man by one who is in authority. As a priesthood holder, Larisa's Dad can give blessings of peace, comfort, guidance and healing to those who seek for that divine help. Larisa knew early on and had the faith that a blessing from her Dad would make her feel better. And I know she continues to seek for that same Spirit as she has been able to receive blessings from her father and grandfather over the past several days.
The joy we all feel, to know that she is waking up and progressing so well, makes us all excited for the healing process to begin and to know what steps are next. The healing process has begun and yet, there is still work to be completed to help the healing move forward. I know many are wondering "How long will she be there?" and "What next?" As of right now, there is no time frame for when and where she will go after the trauma unit. They will just take each day as it comes.
It has been amazing to hear the stories of people all over praying for her to be well. Our family has felt so overwhelmed with the out pouring of love you have shown. I have even received messages from people who do not even know Larisa or the family and have anonymously, indicated that they were praying for her. I suppose just just a little reminder to each of us that the world is still full of great people who just want to share their faith and love. And for that we are all grateful. Thank you so much to all of you who have continued to pray on her behalf.

Larisa Wakes Up
Larisa had a fabulous Friday. Yesterday they ended up closing the rest of her stomach so that it no longer is open except for the colostomy bag. She has been running a temperature of about 102 for the past couple of days. They have done lots of blood work and chest x-rays to check for the beginning stages of pneumonia. The chest x-rays came back normal. They are checking out various options to determine what is causing the temperature. They won't give her an antibiotic until they know exactly what is causing the temperature. She also indicated that Larisa has been having trouble digesting the food from the feeding tube in her stomach. They did give her some medication that will help that digestion to take place. Her right arm, the one that is broken, it has been days since she would move her fingers on that hand. Today she was able to move them when the nurses asked her to wiggle them... Yay!
The highlight of the day came last night- she woke up! She had opened her eyes for a little bit in the afternoon, but last night they said she was awake for about an hour and a half. She was still quit groggy but tried asking questions. Chantel could understand her and said that she was aware of talking to her but was not fully aware of all that had and was going on over the past 8 days. She would ask Larisa the questions and then Larisa would answer. She did ask "what happened?" Chantel told her that she had been in a serious car accident. Larisa said that her leg, arm and throat hurt. Chantel explained to her why things were hurting but did not give lots of detail for fear of scarying her. After about an hour and a half of being awake, pain was increasing. They increased her medication back up a little to help her to relax and decrease the discomfort.
While talking to Larisa, Chantel was telling her about the people who had come by to see her. She told her about her one friend pretending he was her fiance, and Chantel said she just smiled. Chantel told her that no one was allowed to come in and see her, and she said her face got very sad. But told her that once she was better, she would be able to see her family and friends.
What a blessing today has been. As a parent myself, I can only imagine that overwhelming feeling of joy Chantel and Sergio must have felt tonight as they were able to communicate with their sweet Larisa for the first time since the accident. I know that it was with tears of joy and very grateful hearts that they spent those 90 minutes talking to her.
As we learn and hear about experiences such as Larisa's I think we realize how often we take for granted being able to talk to our loved ones and friends. We just never know when it could be the last time we say something to them. I think it makes us all think and evaluate our own relationships with our loved ones, even for just a moment. But when a second chance is given - Hope is restored, faith is increased and family ties are strengthened - what an amazing blessing!

Quiet Rain Thursday
It was a quiet rainy day for Larisa yesterday. Her day was spent resting and recovering from the surgeries of the week. Chantel indicated that swelling continues to decrease and that the next several days will just be resting. She still continues to be incoherent and heavily sedated but showing signs of improvement daily.
People have continued to ask how they can help and support Larisa, even monetarily. What a great day! Larisa was in surgery today from about 9:30am - 3:00pm to repair her elbow, forearm, wrist and knee. All areas were successfully repaired. The Doctor indicated that the elbow was really damaged and required a plate and 8 screws. Her wrist was a little tricky because the bone was broken and slightly shaven, but he was able to fix it. Her knee was broken into several pieces. Chantel was not completely sure what all was done to repair it - plates and screws were put in. Despite the amount of damage done to each area, the doctor feels confident that everything will heal well. Everything is wrapped in soft casts.
Also during surgery today, they removed the ventilator from her mouth and put in a tracheotomy. The reason for that is staying on a ventilator for more than several days through the mouth, increases the chance for infection, pneumonia and mouth sores. Also, over time as she becomes more conscience, it will make it easier to talk without anything in her mouth. They repositioned the feeding tube from her mouth to go through her nose. At this point, there is nothing in her mouth.
The doctors will most likely not perform any other surgeries this week. They are going to allow her body to rest and decrease in swelling. Next week they will repair the foot and ankle. The last surgery to be done will be the pelvis. She also has several fractures in the lumber part of her back. That will require a brace once she is up and moving around more.
Chantel said Larisa looked sooooo much better today. She woke up and opened her eyes briefly 8 times today. She kept trying to move her arms and trying to take things out. The nurses have tied them done at this point, to avoid any problems. She is able to lift her one good arm about 10 inches. Chantel said that she was more wiggly today than she has been, even trying to move her shoulders and head. The movements were more like she was trying to get comfortable.
The nurses are vigilant about cleaning her up. They brush her teeth every 2 hours. This helps to avoid infection. They also use a special powder for her beautiful hair that keeps it from getting oily. They wash her off every night. Chantel told me that Larisa's first word as a baby was "stinky." I am sure should would not want "stinky" to be a word describing her right now. I am also pretty certain she appreciates being as fresh as she can be under the circumstances.
Chantel and Sergio have been extremely overwhelmed at the out pouring of love on behalf of Larisa. Some friends have bought 600 bracelets to sell for Larisa. One friend who is in a band is putting together a benefit concert on her behalf. Ward members are providing meals and support to the family in Martinsburg. They are just so grateful and want each of you to know how much they appreciate all you have and continue to do.
Now, there is never a dull moment for the Menendez family. Just this afternoon, Chantel spent the afternoon in the ER herself!! She was on her way to have lunch. Forgot her water bottle, went back up to get it and on her way down the hall, slipped on some water and sprained her wrist. She is fine, but is also in a soft cast.
So out of a potential of 8 surgeries, 6 have been completed in almost a week! That is amazing! Chantel and Sergio are so grateful for having been blessed with a skilled surgeon who has spent many hours repairing their baby. More importantly, they have been reminded so clearly how very aware our Father in Heaven is of each of us as individuals. And that as we call upon Him in the darkest of moments, He not only hears but answers our prayers.

Surgery Postponed - Oct. 13, 2009
Surgery that was scheduled to take place this morning on Larisa's arm was postponed until tomorrow due to the doctor having an emergency. Today they had planned on just working on her arm, elbow and wrist. Tomorrow they will work on those areas as well as her knee.
Chantel said she was looking really good today. They are hoping to clean and wash her up a little tonight. It has been a good resting day. This will only help her to be stronger tomorrow.

October 13, 2009 - Tues AM
Larisa did very well last night and continues to be strong. This morning they decreased her medication for sedation. Over the next week they will continue to decrease it, but will keep it high enough for pain management.
Surgery this morning has been pushed until between 9:00-11:00 am, for scheduling reasons. The Doctors have also decided to only work on the arm today -- the elbow, forearm and wrist. They will work on the knee in the next few days.
Sergio has returned back to work and the kids have returned back to school. Their Ward and friends have been and will be providing meals over the next week, which they greatly appreciate. This afternoon, Chantel's parents will be going to stay at the Menendez home to help with things at the house and the kids.
I will update later this evening on the results of surgery today.

October 12, 2009 - Monday Night
Surgery this morning to close Larisa's stomach went well. She was in surgery for about 2 hours and did great. They only closed the muscle layer and not the skin, yet. That will come later - they did not specify when. Chantel could not believe how much better she looked today. She said that the swelling over all had decreased "enormously." They were just so happy to see how good she looked.
Tonight they did a CAT Scan of her arm and knee in preparation for the next surgery. Tomorrow they are planning to begin surgery between 6-7am to repair the 2 breaks in her forearm, her elbow, her wrist and her knee. We don't know how long it will be or what they will do exactly. They will have a better idea once they get in there and see how things look.
Also this evening they started a feeding tube that goes through her nose to her stomach. Chantel said, "We watched her get her first milkshake." She also indicated that they have her propped up, "Like she is laying at the beach." All great signs of progress.
Larisa is still not conscience and heavily sedated. However, as the repairs are complete, they will begin to slowly wean her off the medications, as her body begins to heal and adjust - making the pain manageable. I know we are all anxious to see that pretty smile and hear her sweet voice...
She is still on a ventilator, helping her to breath. Over time that too will be weaned off as they re-train her body to breath on its own. Chantel said tonight at times her breathing was a little slower, more like normal breathing, she thinks her body maybe beginning to make that transition.
We continue to express our thanks and gratitude for you concern and prayers for Larisa and her family. It is times like these when our perspectives on life are changed and life's priorities become more in focus that we reflect on the many blessings we have right within our reach. I think if we were to live our life each day as if it were our last, we may find that we hug our loved ones more frequently, we spend our time more wisely, and we appreciate more fully the life we have be given.

October 12, 2009 - Morning
Larisa did great last night. The doctors this morning were extremely pleased with how she was doing. They indicated that the swelling all over had decreased significantly. As a result of her doing so well, they have just minutes ago taken her back into surgery to close up her stomach. YAY! Tonight they will decide about what to do tomorrow. This is all great news.
They also were able to change sheets and shift her around a little, all signs of progress.
Last night Chantel and Sergio went back to spend time with the other kids. She reported that is was a wonderful night just spending time talking about things with them. All of the kids are doing well and will head back to school tomorrow. Sergio will need to go back to work tomorrow as well. We picked up Art and Joyce (Chantel's parents) at the airport last night and they will be heading to the Menendez home tomorrow afternoon to help take care of things there.
Chantel wanted me to share with you a story that happened the night of the accident (I believe) that reflects the the type of person Larisa is and the relationship she has with her Father in Heaven.
They had gone it the room and were standing near her bed side. Larisa was not conscience and was wearing a soft collar, since they were not sure of all her injuries. Chantel turned to look at her and noticed very distinctly Larisa shaking her head NO. She stopped and did it again, shaking her head NO. She watched and the third time, she very distinctly nodded YES.
Chantel feels very strongly that Larisa was having a very personal and one on one conversation with someone of the other side. And that through this conversation Larisa made a choice to fight and stay with us. She was probably told it would be hard, but, regardless she wanted to be here and was willing to make that decision. Chantel says it will be neat to see if Larisa will remember this experience and if she will be able to recall if something like that took place. How blessed we are to know how very thin the veil is and that we are watched over and protected daily by those who love us here as well as those who love us on the other side.

October 10, 2009, Sunday Night
GREAT DAY! Larisa did fabulous. She went in for surgery around 10am this morning and came out about 4pm this afternoon. It was a long afternoon but Doctors were very happy with the outcome and indicated that Larisa was strong during the procedures.
Today they focused on her femur and hip. They removed all the packing out of her leg and put in a titanium rod. The doctors indicated that the femur bone was crushed in middle, but would heal on its own over time. They also removed the traction for her leg and closed up the wound, so that it can now begin to heal.
They also put 3 screws in her hip and will address the pelvis later when the swelling decreases.
Tomorrow she will rest, and they plan to do surgery on her knee and elbow on other Tuesday or Wednesday.
Today one of the bright spots for Chantel and Sergio was when a few of Larisa's friends came to visit. They loved sitting and listening to the memories that each of these friends shared about time spent with Larisa. Chantel commented that "It would tickle her (Larisa) to death to see what people remember about her." She thought if anyone would like to send emails to the gmail account and share some of those memories, that would be great.
One of the highlights of the day, that brought much needed laughter was a visit from Cody and Caleb - 2 good friends of Larisa's who Chantel could tell just adored Larisa. They had arrived at the hospital not during visiting hours and some how got in. Chantel asked them how they were able to get in? Caleb replied, "I just told them I was her fiance!" Well, that was the begining of all kinds of good laughs and even the thought of purchasing a RING POP to make it official.
In a recent talk given by our Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, he quoted James Barrie, a Scottish poet saying "God gave us memories so that we may have June roses in the December of our lives." And I think today they felt the reality of this quote as they sat and shared great memories that over time have created great bonds of friendship.
Chantel reminds us how very important it is to never take for granted what we have been given. Particularly, our children and our families. We all need to take more time to hug one another and express our love for each other daily. You just never know when things could change.

In a recent talk given by our Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, he quoted James Barrie, a Scottish poet saying "God gave us memories so that we may have June roses in the December of our lives." And I think today they felt the reality of this quote as they sat and shared great memories that over time have created great bonds of friendship.
Chantel reminds us how very important it is to never take for granted what we have been given. Particularly, our children and our families. We all need to take more time to hug one another and express our love for each other daily. You just never know when things could change.
Tonight Chantel and Sergio went and enjoyed dinner with Kerlina and then headed back to Martinsburg with Astrid (Larisa's Aunt) to spend time with the other kids at home.
Chantel and Sergio would like to express their sincere thanks for fasting and praying for Larisa. They have truly felt the blessings that have come from those prayers.

Larisa went into surgery this morning at 9:00am. As of right now, 3:20, she is still in surgery. Chantel and Sergio have not heard much from the doctors. At this point they are just waiting. The fact that she is still in surgery is a good sign that her body is strong and able to allow them to work this long. She continues to be a fighter. We will be anxious to see what they are able to complete today.

We want to thank all of you who have called expressing continued concern for Larisa. Her immediate and extended family are so grateful for loving and caring friends.
Due to swelling and not being able to take x-rays it is difficult to assess each injury accurately. The doctors are addressing each area on a day to day basis.
Today Larisa underwent surgery to make beginning corrections to her foot. The surgeon indicated that the condition of the her foot was not as bad as they had anticipated, she's off on the right foot!
They cleaned out her stomach, but it is not closed due to swelling. It is covered with a large piece of tape and a drainage tube out the side. Chantel said she noticed that the pump had stopped working on her drainage tube. A nurse got it fixed and told her,"Good call Mom." Chantel replied, "I've got nothing else to do but sit here and look at her."

Larisa had a CAT scan today and her head and neck look good. Some small fractures in her lower back, but pelvis/spine separation was not as bad as one doctor had originally told her. He told them it would have to be repaired with bolts at a later date. The Lady Dr. who looked over the scan today, did not see any signs of separation only small fractures. Larisa will wear a brace for a period of time. Her back should heal on its own, but it will be painful. Chantel asked that we pray for her back.
Overall a encouraging and hopeful day. Tomorrow will be a big day, she will be undergoing major surgery. The surgeons are going to try to address as many of the injuries as possible. Their main focus will be her femur, pelvis and hip bones. Depending on how she does, will depend on how much they will be able to do.

Larisa is a fighter. She made it through the night! Today we have a better idea of her injuries. They are listed below.
She has an arm broken in two places, broken elbow, pelvis broken in two places and separated from spinal column, compound fracture in her femur, broken wrist, and the knee cap was shattered. Her lungs are bruised and filled with some fluid. Her kidneys are bruised as well. Some slight swelling in her face but no other injuries to her head.
Due to the severity of the injuries, Larisa is heavily sedated and has not been conscience. She had a moment where she opened her eyes and was able to follow a few commands given by the doctor.
She is not stable but continues to show us her strong spirit.
Other than immediate family, NO VISITORS are allowed in to see Larisa. Again if you would like to send a note to Larisa or her family please send to the email: prayers4larisa@gmail.com and not directly on this blogspot. Her family will have access to these emails.

On Thursday night around 7pm, Larisa was involved in a serious car accident. She was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital in northern VA to the Trauma Unit. She under went emergency surgery removing her spleen and part of the large intestine. She sustained many serious injuries as a result of the accident.
